Located on a sheltered bay on the southern tip of Vancouver Island near Victoria, Pearson College is a diverse community of 200 students and approximately 50 faculty and staff. Development Manager, Alumni and Annual Giving
The Manager of Alumni and Annual Giving reports directly to the Director of Development and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Development Office. The Manager works closely with all Development staff and in close collaboration with the Director of Finance.
Responsibilities include overseeing donor stewardship including donation processing, direct mail and all alumni campaigns. The Manager will also support the Director of the College and College Trustees with individual alumni meetings and alumni events around the world. The Manager will also be responsible for alumni fundraising with the College’s US Foundation.
Skills, Experience and Attributes Required
- Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field; supplemented with three to five years of successful experience in alumni relations and fundraising with proven results.
- Highly developed organizational skills with an ability to organize and coordinate activities, deadlines and details in a complex and dynamic environment.
- Able to work effectively as a member of a high performance team.
- Able to manage a high volume workload with frequent interruptions.
- Self motivation, critical thinking, discretion, tact and judgment while maintaining a high level of confidentiality.
- Possess creativity and highly-developed analytical, verbal and writing skills.
- Interpersonal/human relation and diplomacy skills and ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Ability to take initiative and display maturity, independence and reliability.
- Ability to operate a variety of software packages including Word, Excel, Outlook, Raiser’s Edge, website content management systems.
- Positive outlook and a sense of humour.
- Energized by the prospect of working closely with current students at the College as well as alumni in establishing a culture of philanthropy among students, alumni and their families.
- Enjoy working with bright, energetic 16-19 year olds and engaging them in the work of Development office.
Knowledge Required
- Knowledge of all elements of fundraising with particular experience in direct mail, monthly giving programs, alumni fundraising and events such as College reunions.
- Knowledge of the United World College movement and the history of Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific, its programs, traditions and strategic plans or the ability to rapidly develop such knowledge.
Responsibilities
- Overall coordination and planning of alumni and annual fundraising campaign including:
- Development of direct mail campaign to increase retention of donors, average donation amount and overall annual revenue.
- Review of current monthly giving program and implementation of strategies to increase number and average donation of monthly giving donors.
- Provide support for alumni year representatives and reunion fundraising volunteers with their activities.
- Improvement of recognition and stewardship program for annual donors
- Liaises with alumni and other individual donors to ensure positive and ongoing relationships towards the promotion of the College and its needs; and
- Provide suggestions for major gift prospects for solicitation from alumni and annual donor base
This is a temporary full time position due to an employee on leave. This position will end approximately July 2011. Pearson College is expanding its fundraising capacity and may have new positions opening after that date in its Development office.
Vice President, Philanthropy & Engagement
Pearson College is seeking a Vice President, Philanthropy & Engagement to orchestrate and coordinate the College’s strategy and efforts in fundraising, alumni and donor engagement, and communications and marketing. Reporting to the College Director, and partnering closely with the Development Committee of the Board of Trustees, the new incumbent will serve as a member of the Pearson’s Executive Team. The Vice President, Philanthropy & Engagement will also work in close collaboration with Pearson’s Foundation Boards in Canada and the USA.
Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
As Vice President, Philanthropy & Engagement for Pearson College, the incumbent will:
- Create and lead the development and implementation of a strategic advancement plan that aligns with and supports the College’s mission and vision
- Establish, administer and assess the strategic advancement plan for development, communications, and alumni, donor, and government relations
- Based on overall strategies and program goals, develop annual operation plans for each of these areas, with clear targets and accountabilities, ensuring that best-practice activities are in place to support advancement goals
- Assume responsibility and accountability for day-to-day Advancement operations, staff, and budgets
- Design and implement policies, procedures, and reports, and provide appropriate oversight and guidance, to ensure that the Advancement database is maintained in a manner that allows it to be used to its full potential
- Contribute to the overall direction and management of the College by serving as a member of the College’s Executive team
- Collaborate with direct, and support the volunteer based Development Committee of the Board, Regional Advisory Counsels and volunteer members of the Canadian and US Foundation Boards
