History

Lester B. Pearson, Nobel Peace Laureate and former Prime Minister of Canada, was the driving force behind the founding of Pearson College. After retiring from public life, Mr. Pearson became very interested in the United World Colleges movement. At the time there was only one United World College—the College of the Atlantic in Wales.

Mr. Pearson visited the College of the Atlantic in 1969 and met with the students and faculty. He came away convinced that there must be more such colleges around the world and, in particular, one on Canada's West Coast. At that time he said:

Students will be welcomed without regard to race, religion or politics and we intend to establish scholarships so that the students who attend the College will be from all levels of society and will be genuine representatives of their own peoples. This system … could become a revolutionary force in international education.

Lester B. Pearson became Honorary Chairman of a committee formed to build what was to be known as the College of the Pacific. Mr. Pearson worked tirelessly to get things started, but he passed away in December 1972 just as the project was beginning.

Soon after his death it was decided that the College would be a most appropriate living memorial and it was renamed Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific. The Hon. John Nichol, C.C. was chosen as founding Chairman of the Board of Trustees and a major volunteer effort began. Many people from all parts of Canada and from around the world gave generously of their time and money to get the College underway. Over $4,000,000 was raised in the initial capital drive, of which 83% came from private individuals, corporations and foundations, and the remaining 17% from governments.

Jack Matthews was appointed as the founding Director of the College and he was charged with recruiting a faculty of men and women from around the globe. On September 25th, 1973, construction on the College began and a year later on September 25th, 1974, the first 100 students arrived. Since then 200 students have attended each year on full scholarship. Pearson College continues to be funded through the generosity of corporations, foundations, individuals and governments—many of whom have supported the College throughout it 34-year history.

Today, more than 3,300 students have graduated from Pearson College. They are working in many professions and capacities in every corner of the world and are applying in their lives the ideals which we have encouraged here. They share a determination to make a difference and work in their communities as a positive force for peace.
